Storm water design has traditionally been situating pipes to get the water away as fast as possible, but now after several generations of pushing the problem downstream major damage has been done to receiving streams including pollution, and major erosion. Most municipalities require storm water detention to slow the water and help alleviate erosion, but many are now also requiring water quality features. Ecological stormwater design is important not just for meeting the code, but also for the environment. Storm water solutions can be worked artfully into the site design to avoid large detention ponds and work as multi use areas and as ecologically blended plantings that provide color and interest to the site while providing a water quality function. Ironically, do things with a more natural bent can be a more affordable option.
